Job Introduction

In partnership with Department Managers and Shift Leaders/Supervisory personnel, responsible for coordinating and ensuring that all safety and environmental standards are maintained and in compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations as well as Williamsburg Mfg. and Magna policies. In partnership with department Managers and Shift Leaders/Supervisory personnel, ensure that all training requirements, including on the job training, are met.

Major Responsibilities
  • Ensure Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures are consistently applied based on the principles of the Magna Employee’s Charter, Corporate and Divisional policy, as and in compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations

  • Ensure a safe work environment by coordinating all safety activities to reduce workplace accidents and protect associates

  • Plan and coordinate internal and external safety training for all associates

  • Coordinate and attend all meetings and activities of the JHSC and Ergonomics Committees

  • Maintain effective communication and coordination with all internal customers, plant management and associates; maintain positive employee relations; listen to issues and concerns and respond promptly

  • Follow the principles of the Magna Employee Charter

  • Promote and practice “safety first” by immediately addressing any hazards, defective equipment or unsafe conditions within the department

  • Support new program launches as needed

  • Provide motivation and results-oriented environment

  • Provide counsel and support to associates and management on health, safety and environmental matters

  • Establish written safety standards and annually update and review these policies and procedures

  • Evaluate safety and ergonomic issues in workstation design and layout and in the development stage of manufacturing processes and equipment

  • Provide and maintain statistics to assist in continuous improvement in the area of workplace safety and loss control

  • Review all accident/incident investigation reports and provide leadership in developing and implementing corrective actions

  • Analyze loss control statistics and make recommendations for continuous improvement

  • Coordinate the selection of personal protective equipment (PPE) and appropriate fit testing of such items

  • Conduct monthly safety and environmental audits and report results to division management

  • Coordinate meetings and provide necessary administrative support to Health, Safety and Environmental Committee

  • Ensure that the Health and Safety portions of the Action Plan resulting from the Employee Opinion Survey are completed in a timely fashion.

  • Maintain a high profile with associates on the plant floor and be a strong advocate to ensure that associate safety and environmental concerns and issues are resolved in a timely manner

  • Monitor new and amended legislation and remain current with the latest health, safety and environmental requirements

  • Keep safety boards updated throughout facility and post minutes of Health, Safety and Environmental Committee meetings

  • Implement, maintain and report on status of the Environmental Management System per ISO-14001 requirements

  • Maintain statistical information on waste streams

  • Coordinate recycling program

  • Coordinate spill control team

  • Participate in monthly associate meetings

  • Provide supervisors with safety topics for use in line meetings

  • Report on status of departmental projects as required

  • Monitor Material Safety Date Sheets (MSDS) and ensure they are updated

  • Investigate ways to reduce waste and environmental liability

  • Conduct sampling as required to comply with environmental regulations

  • Coordinate sampling, transportation and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams

  • Handle confidential information on a regular basis

  • Complete correspondence, forms and reports in Microsoft Office and other required programs

  • Ensure all employee documentation is maintained

  • Encourage safety and housekeeping practices and lead by example

  • Promote and facilitate Open Door process without reprisal, effective communication and Fair Treatment

  • Participate in Continual Improvement activities

  • Adhere to customer requirements, Business Operating System and company policies

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Education

Qualifications

  • Able to demonstrate understanding of how job performance affects product quality and customer satisfaction

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated leadership capabilities

  • Must be a team player and promote a team approach to problem solving

  • Highly self motivated and flexible

  • Must be capable of working under pressure and with short completion times on projects, and of working flexible hours in order to meet both internal and external customer requirements

  • Able to use computer and software as required

  • Able to maintain confidentiality and use discretion and tact

Education

  • Bachelor of Science degree in safety engineering, ergonomics or a related discipline is preferred, or at least 7 years equivalent experience in an industrial environment
Work Experience
  • Five years experience in health, safety and environmental field, in a manufacturing environment

  • Minimum of 1 year in a training related position
