UnityPoint Health Athletic Trainer in West Des Moines, Iowa

Uses professional skills and abilities as a Certified Athletic Trainer to manage health of patients related to Physical Capacity Profile (PCP) Testing and supports patients during procedures. The ATC will be certified to perform Physical Capacity Profile testing and processes the results in accordance with all rules and regulations for testing. Will also be certified to perform DOT Breath Alcohol and Drug Screen collections, in addition to other duties as appropriate to include rooming patients, performing vital signs and vision testing. Will be knowledgeable of the post offer physical process and contribute to the successful flow and efficiency of all clinic processes. The ATC will assist in demonstrating the PCP test to clients and in marketing and selling PCP services to prospective and current Occupational Medicine clients. Will interact with business contacts in a professional and positive manner.

Successful performance contributes to a holistic approach to the delivery of services, and a high level of satisfaction from patients and employers. Uses effective communication skills and team approach to work with co-workers, patients and clients. Works with Manager of Operations and Director to collaboratively market PCP testing services to employers by scheduling PCP Demonstrations for prospective employers.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

" Answers questions and provides information to patients/clients, third party payers and other health care personnel as instructed.

" Documents appropriate information in the patient's chart; completes patient forms.

" Assists with simple and complex procedures; i.e., specimen collections, application of splints, measuring crutches, application of ice pack and other related procedures.

" Takes and records vital signs, height and weight and performs vision and color vision exams.

" Assists Manager of Operations in marketing PCP services to clients.

" Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly environment.

" Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.

" Integrates and demonstrates FOCUS values to guide professional behaviors, while adhering to the policies and procedures UPHDM.

" Practice reflects knowledge of HIPAA, DNV, OSHA, DOT, and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding occupational medicine and healthcare.

Minimum Requirements

Identify items that are minimally required to perform the essential functions of this position.


Bachelors Degree from accredited college and practical experience in the practice of athletic training.


Experience in prevention and care of the athletic injuries.

Knowledge and skill in effective organization and instruction of strength, conditioning, and care of athletic injury programs.


Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers Association.

Licensed as an Athletic Trainer in the state of Iowa.


Must read, write, speak and comprehend English.

Must be able to communicate effectively (written and orally) with people of diverse professional, educational and lifestyle backgrounds.
