UnityPoint Health Referral Specialist-Oncology in Waterloo, Iowa

The role of the Referral Specialist is to coordinate all patient referrals at the request of the providers, obtain/review pre-authorization/pre-certification, and coordinate communications with physician offices, companies, third-party payers and case managers; documenting appropriately within the medical record. The Referral Specialist will ensure appropriate appointments and follow-up appointments in the department following referral requests/visits and ensure documentation from specialists/offices is obtained, filed in the chart and forwarded to companies/payers as appropriate. The Referral Specialist will perform patient registration tasks and procedures as requested as well as assist in the clinical area as trained and requested.

The Referral Specialist will ensure appropriate appointments and follow-up appointments in the department following referral requests/visits and ensure documentation from specialists/offices is obtained, filed in the chart and forwarded to companies/payers as appropriate. The Referral Specialist will perform patient registration tasks and procedures as requested as well as assist in the clinical area as trained and requested. Initiates all referral requests within 24 hours on business days. Returns all calls promptly generally within the same day. Documenting all stages of the referral process within all EMR programs and communicating to the appropriate people regarding injury case. Coordinate and schedule of specialty exams within clinic as necessary. Obtains and/or documents approvals from Third-Party Payers for payment for services as directed or indicated via protocols. Answers phone calls and acts as liaison between companies, patients, attorneys and work comp insurance companies. Communicates to company of work comp visit no shows and calls in prescriptions to pharmacies and faxes vouchers to pharmacy for med refills. Requests any missing dictation from specialty physicians, once received and signed off by medical director, scans appropriate information into EMR program.

Qualifications: Certified Medical Assistant, Medical Assistant with on-the-job training, or completion of Medical Administrative Secretarial course, a health care related course or degree. Clerical specialist with experience, or experience as a Referral Specialist in a clinic setting will be considered in lieu of required education. 1- 3 years experience in a clinical office setting. Minimum three years experience in a clinical office setting for occupational health, primary care, orthopedics, pain management, oncology or neurology preferred. Proficient in Systoc, EPIC and other software programs as implemented Proficient in Word documents Proficient in multiple-line telephone systems Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in written form in English Training in or knowledge of medical terminology, CPT and ICD coding preferred.
