This is a full-time position providing high-quality classroom instruction to the students of the Emergency Medical Services/Fire Science Program. Teaching responsibilities may include a variety of transfer and technical courses. Teaching assignments may include days and evenings, and various sites and formats (face-to-face, on-line, ICN). A full-time teaching load of 15 credit hours per term is typical.


Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Experience with or commitment to various instructional modalities and curriculum development.

  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are appropriate for meeting stated objectives, assessing accomplishments of students on a regular basis, and providing progress reports as requested and required.

  • Formulates and maintains curriculum for assigned courses.

  • Supervises and advises students.

  • Maintains cooperative relationships with the Dean, supervisors, other faculty, the Advisory Committee, all divisions of the College, prospective employers, and the community.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Associate in Applied Science (AAS) paramedic degree or equivalent certification.

  • Three years full-time work experience at the paramedic level.

  • Must have medical or allied health education, training and experience including field experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital emergency care.

  • Must have at least one year experience teaching paramedic level courses.

  • Must possess a current active National Registry and Iowa Paramedic Certification as well as an Iowa EMS Instructor endorsement.

  • Must be knowledgeable about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Education Standards, and about evidence-informed clinical practice.

  • Professional work experience with diverse populations.


  • Related Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

  • Three years’ experience teaching paramedic level courses.

  • Possession of NAEMSE Level I Instructor Certification or National Emergency Medical Services Instructor Certification (NEMSCEC).

  • Experience teaching EMS with high fidelity simulation.

  • Experience teaching through distance education technologies.


Full time nine-month contractual position beginning in January of 2019 with comprehensive benefits program including health, dental, vision, life, and LTD insurance, a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expenses; personal and sick leave; and a choice of retirement programs—IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA (defined contribution). Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s education and experience.
