Shift: Will generally be 7a-3:30p but hours vary depending on need.

As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional laboratory knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Maintains a practice environment that reflects the UnityPoint Focus Values, College of American Pathologist standards, and St. Luke’s Medical Laboratory Procedures and Policies.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Accurately maintains the necessary procedures, documentation, and records to ensure the section is in an “inspection ready” state to meet CAP guidelines and all other applicable standards and regulations including the FDA, AABB, JCAHO, HCFA, CAP, and OSHA.

  • Takes responsibility to ensure the delivery of quality and effective services to all customers through

  • Monitoring customer satisfaction reports and feedback, analyzing statistical reports & comparative databases relative to performance and cost, and team participation in identifying and resolving inter-departmental issues.

  • Implements, maintains, and monitors programs for quality control, preventive maintenance.

  • Proficiency surveys and QIF program indicators. Performs similar functions for non-Lab testing personnel doing “waived” testing.

  • Documents and plans replacement schedules for all non-capital and fixed (capital) equipment.

  • Researches, evaluates, budgets, and submits proposals to replace existing instruments. Validates and implements equipment according to approved crossover protocols. Provides input for the operating budget and monitors financial performance.

  • Works with the Pathologist Director and/or appropriate associate Pathologist to designate, implement, and perform an annual program to assess competency for all staff working in the area of responsibility. This includes an initial assessment for new employees. Also oversees a training and competency-testing program for non-laboratory personnel doing “waived” testing.

  • Participates in the interview and employee selection process. Uses such Medical Center programs as “Managing for Success” to document performance issues. Completes the annual performance.

  • Appraisal of subordinates using the UnityPoint evaluation system in a consistent, fair, and timely manner.

  • Orients new employees to the workplace including procedures and policies, safety information, General information, introduction to coworkers, and completion of the HR new hire checklist.

  • Responsible to establish staffing schedules to complete work efficiently and within budget.

  • Will work with team members on the schedule and work a weekend rotation.

  • Adjusts work assignments in real time within the department to cover changing work volumes and priorities. Works with the Service Manager to meet customer needs and expectations.

  • Conducts regular meetings with staff to in service, communicate, and update staff members for:

  • Efficient and safe operations. Informs staff of changes in Medical Center protocols and/or programs.

  • Acts as a resource to assist staff with understanding and compliance with mandated Policies and procedures.

  • Assumes responsibility for personal technical and managerial competency and continuing education by attending professional meetings, workshops, Medical Center provided educational opportunities and involvement in professional organizations. Actively participates outside the Department with educational, committee, and/or service work.

  • Communication: Communicates well both verbally and in writing, creates accurate and punctual reports, delivers presentations, shares information and ideas with others, has good listening skills.

  • Associates or Bachelors Degree required


  • MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MLT (ASCP) or 3 years of Phlebotomy experience

  • Experience in Leadership, Budgets, and conflict management
