Mechanical Design Engineer ISioux City, IA


  • Uses engineering skills and manufacturing experience to design sheet metal enclosures and pole structures to house equipment for the wireless industry.

  • Communicates real time updates to Engineering Manager.

  • Produces production ready designs considering production feasibility, cost, manufacturability and design accuracy.

  • Recommends/implements design changes for reduction in production cycle times, optimal cost efficiency, universal component use and ease of assembly.

  • Considers in design intent ways to improve productivity and quality.

  • Considers cost of materials, manufacturability, and labor to determine project feasibility.

  • Designs aesthetically pleasing, thermally efficient and structurally sound products.

  • Evaluates customer design specifications and assures compliance throughout development cycle.

  • Initiates daily communication on project status to Engineering Manager. Demonstrates technical product knowledge, design configurations, concepts and limitations and quality processes.

  • Acquires knowledge and assures adherence to all Sabre procedures and policy for engineering, production, tracking and follow-up.

  • Travels with overnight stays to customer and vendor locations as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • 1+ years of mechanical design experience preferred.

  • 1+ years of sheet metal design and manufacturing experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

  • Knowledge and proficient use of Solidworks 3D design software. Preferably 3 years minimum experience.

  • Proficient use of a 3D Mouse and mouse gestures for command and execution of models and drawings in Solidworks is preferred.

  • Proficiency creating drawings.

  • Familiarity with other CAD systems is desired.

  • Knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Office applications.

  • Knowledge of welding and annotating welds in drawings desirable.

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in sheet metal cabinet construction. Knowledge of tubular steel and pole construction an asset.

  • Experience with PDM and document control preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience evaluating design tradeoffs to achieve the most efficient cost effective designs.

  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of technical drawings and models.

  • Telecom experience is a plus, especially the wireless industry.

  • Professional and effective English communication skills. Ability to communicate information through speech and in writing to be easily understood by all personal, internal and external. Must maintain a level of confidentiality.

  • Must have a current, valid driver's license and meet Sabre's vehicle insurability requirements.

  • Ability to use hand tools for light assembly/modification of test and prototype articles for third party or in-house lab work.

  • Position will include an office environment, customer and vendor locations. Position will require working on a computer, phone and with general office equipment. Regularly required to use hands to work on the computer, finger, handle or grasp, reach with hands and arms. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Must be able to pass standard pre-employment vision test.

Educational Requirements:

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or closely related field.


  • Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, Overtime and Weekends as needed
