Collects and processes lab specimens and performs clinical laboratory testing, including manual and automated methods, in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures. Responsible for pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing. Ensures all medical laboratory safety standards and quality requirements are met. Serves as a laboratory resource to other health care personnel. Must utilize critical and independent judgement in decision-making and problem-solving.
Adheres to established internal standards and procedures abstracted from Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Adheres to relevant policies and ethics for clinical laboratory testing. Collects medical specimens with strict adherence to established procedures and test requisitions. Identifies available resources and support systems for troubleshooting. Maintains current certifications in specialty and continues education when necessary. Presents a professional image, especially when dealing with customers. Promotes organizational learning through knowledge management, training and development, and sharing key experiences. Works with quality assurance methods, tools and techniques.
This is a full time position working varied hours, one weekend a month with limited call. Must be proficient in Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Serology, and Phlebotomy. The Sheldon laboratory is part of a 25-bed critical access hospital in northwest Iowa. We service multiple providers and three outlying clinics. We have many senior care facilities we proved care for as well as OB and pediatric practices. We provide services to many visiting specialists and doctors from surrounding communities. Our laboratory provides testing in hematology, chemistry, coagulation, blood bank, serology, and limited microbiology. Our team works well together and has a small town family feel. Sheldon is a quiet community with many recreational opportunities, a community college, a great school system, and new housing and large community center.

Possess a national certification for Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or be registry eligible. Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) also acceptable. Registry eligible candidates must successfully complete the Board of Registry examination within 12 months of employment. If working in North Dakota (ND), must be licensed by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice. Maintain continuing education credits equivalent to the state requirements as needed for license and certifications. May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Bachelors degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences required.
