Indian Hills Community College Department Chair, Nursing in Ottumwa, Iowa

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Associate Dean, Health Sciences, this individual will lead the nursing program administration, recruit students, provide student and staff mentoring & advising and provide excellent communication. Will coordinate curriculum revisions, program assessment and be responsible for nursing program accreditation. Will select learning experiences at hospitals and other health care agencies for students in the nursing programs. Will supervise nursing faculty and conduct performance evaluations.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing with licensure as a registered nurse in Iowa or a compact state.

  • Masters of Science in Nursing required.

  • Three years of full-time clinical nursing practice as an RN, plus minimum of two years of full-time experience in nursing education.

  • Supervisory experience preferred.

  • Must relate well to people and display a high degree of competency within the field.

  • Excellent organizational skill and high emphasis on attention to detail.

  • Knowledge of Curriculum Development desired.

Work Performed:

  • Function within the framework of the philosophy and objectives of IHCC and the Health Sciences Division.

  • Promptly and professionally communicate with all students, faculty, staff and community partners.

  • Assist in maintaining public relations with the local community and take part in community relations when possible.

  • Maintain cooperative relationships with professional personnel, local organizations, public officials and other interested people.

  • Represent the College in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community.

  • Work in close cooperation with the Health Sciences faculty and staff at affiliating health care agencies.

  • Meet all assigned tasks and office commitments as scheduled.

  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance at work.

  • Actively participate in program promotion and recruitment of students, provide academic advising as needed.

  • Assist in placement and follow up of graduates, and maintain follow-up data on graduates.

  • Inject relevant personal work experience into student advisement to assist in the preparation for entry into employment.

  • Organize and conduct new student orientations for the Nursing programs.

  • Plan, chair and maintain minutes of all nursing faculty meetings.

  • Schedule and conduct biannual Nursing Program advisory committee meetings, responsible for meeting agenda and seeking input from advisors.

  • Oversee program purchasing and assist with budget development and monitoring.

  • Actively serve on any committee to which appointed.

  • Secure and maintain clinical site agreements.

  • Supervise nursing faculty and staff, conduct performance evaluations and assist with hiring of nursing faculty and staff.

  • Coordinate with Health Sciences Simulation lab staff and operations.

  • Supervise students and staff applying nursing principles and providing nursing care.

  • Appropriately assign staff to nursing program committees and delegate committee responsibilities for program improvement.

  • Plan and coordinate nursing curriculum and curriculum revisions.

  • Stay up to date with trends in the field and update program curriculum and equipment as appropriate to improve student learning.

  • Maintain program accreditation and communicate changes to supervisor.

  • Assist in planning and carrying out studies and surveys.

  • Coordinate the assignment of clinical learning experiences for assigned nursing students at affiliating health care agencies.

  • Emphasize to students the importance of prompt and regular class attendance.

  • Instill a realistic work attitude in students with clear expectations for skill development.

  • Submit appropriate referrals for students in need of services. Appropriately report student conduct matters in a timely manner.

  • Attend and participate in all scheduled faculty meetings unless excused by the division dean.

  • Keep accurate inventories of equipment and supplies and submit requisitions for needed materials.

  • Promptly report repairs needed for the classroom and equipment.

  • Lead the Nursing program in Program Review and Assessment processes.

  • Attend career fairs, recruiting events and community events to promote the academic program, club and/or college.

  • Assign and support club advisor to provide support for students in program-related co-curricular groups.

  • Other duties as may be assigned.

9 hrs/day, Monday through Thursday, 7:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Salary Range:

$68,283.00 - 74,949.00
