Physical Therapist


This PRN Days position is located at Skiff Medical Center, Newton, IA.

POSITION SUMMARY: Is responsible for providing physical therapy services as determined by medical direction, therapist judgment, patient needs and desires, and available facilities. Organize and conduct physical therapy programs in the hospital and community to restore function, relieve pain, and prevent disability following disease or injury. Help patient reach his/her optimal physical abilities and learn to live within the limits of his/her capabilities.


  • Obtain information from physician(s) needed for diagnosis, prescribed therapy, and patient evaluation.

  • Plan and implement appropriate therapy program for assigned patients, involving physical agents, such as heat, water, light and electricity.

  • Apply diagnostic and prognostic muscle, nerve, joint and physical ability tests.

  • Direct and aid with manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, gait, and functional training.

  • Direct patients in care and use of wheelchairs, braces, canes, crutches, and prosthetic and orthotic devices.

  • Evaluate and document patient findings/care for review by physician, insurers/payers, and other members of rehabilitative team in a timely manner.

  • Requisition supplies and equipment.

  • Provide education services to local business and community groups, which may include health and fitness education, ergonomic assessment and recommendations, employee treatment, and job screens.

  • Supervise physical therapy assistants, technicians, and other P.T. support staff.

  • Supervise students and interns in the delivery of physical therapy services.

  • Conduct and participate in training medical and nursing personnel in physical therapy techniques and objectives.

  • Participate in staff conferences, inservices and educational programs.

  • Orient, instruct, and direct work activities of assistants, aides and students.

  • May effectively work with a variety of age groups from pediatrics to geriatrics.

  • Maintain and improve treatment skill and profession knowledge through literature, APTA meetings/events, seminars, and continuing education courses.

  • Maintain CPR certification.

  • Conduct patient education programs as indicated for individual patient needs.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Provide appropriate services to home health and nursing home residents given the facilities available.

  • Cordially deal with the public; cordially receives patients and guests, ascertain their needs, and appropriately direct patients, guests, and callers; assist patients, patients’ families, referring physicians, and third party carriers with regard to patient-related issues in a high volume environment.

  • Schedules patients for medical evaluations, consultations, and treatments at appropriate times.

  • Maintains familiarity with various types of medical insurance to explain the plans. Obtains pre-certifications as required by patients’ health care insurers or managed care providers; assist patients or family members with completion of medical insurance forms.

  • Operates computer to access e-mail, electronic calendars, and other basic office support software.

  • Uses automated systems to access, enter, and edit patient information/documentation.

  • Knows the formal and informal department goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include familiarity of other departments within the medical center. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department. Assures that oral communication (both in person and by phone) is relayed to appropriate staff person.

  • Will demonstrate professional behavior which may include: excellent internal and external customer service skills; avoids demonstrating or participating in inappropriate or unacceptable behavior in the workplace which includes, but is not limited to, sarcasm, disgruntled behavior (e.g. rolling eyes, other body language/gestures of dissatisfaction, verbal comments, and insubordination).

  • Handles administrative, patient, and personnel information with strict confidentiality; protect the reputation and integrity of others through strict confidentiality; demonstrate a high level of trust.

  • Maintain respectful and open communication with fellow coworkers


EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited physical therapist educational program.

EXPERIENCE: None required if education and licensure are met.

LICENSURE: Maintain license to practice physical therapy in the state of Iowa. Maintain current BLS certification.
