POSITIONSUMMARY: Manager of Pharmacy is ultimately responsible for activities of the pharmacy department. This includes maintaining policies and procedures, hiring and maintaining competent staff, participating in various meetings (Pharmacy & Therapeutics, Med/Surg- Peds/ SNF, Infection Control, Department Head, etc.), maintaining a hospital formulary, and procuring medications cost-effectively.


  • Directs,coordinates, and controls the overall operation of the Pharmacy Department.

  • Assignssupervisory authority and areas of responsibility to the staff pharmacist, andassigns duties and responsibilities to the pharmacy technicians and helpers.

  • Directsand coordinates the integration of the Pharmacy Department’s functions withother aspects of overall patient care.

  • Worksclosely with the nursing and medical staff and other clinical department headsin addressing pharmaceutical services issues and to support the maintenance ofhigh-quality patient care.

  • Evaluatesdrug orders for appropriateness with regard to patient age, condition, diseasestate, and concomitant therapies to promote optimal patient outcomes.

  • Directsthe pharmacy’s quality improvement activities and insures compliance withpatient care and medical practice standards.

  • Directsand controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of all pharmaceuticals andrelated substances and supplies.

  • Develops/monitors systems for packaging/distribution of pharmaceuticals.

  • Servesas Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee Secretary.

  • Developsand implements policies and procedures for the Pharmacy Department inaccordance with hospital policy and HFAP standards.

  • Reviewsorders entered by the technicians on the patient profile. Checks doses placed in the cart bytechnicians to include extemporaneous doses.

  • Reviewsdepartmental payroll records and passes information on to the PayrollDepartment.

  • Directspersonnel function for Pharmacy Department by reviewing on a yearly basis alljob descriptions and performance standards.Implements Skiff Policies and Procedures regarding personnel matters.

  • Directsand participates in complying and analyzing of data on departmental activitiesand services and prepares related reports.

  • Establishand maintain, in cooperation with the Accounting Department, a satisfactorysystem of records and bookkeeping in accordance with the hospital policies for:

  • Charging the patient for pharmaceuticalsand supplies.

  • Maintaining adequate control over therequisition and dispensing of all drugs and pharmaceutical supplies.

  • Developsand maintains Pharmacy Drug Formulary in consultation with the Pharmacy &Therapeutics Committee.

  • Participatesin continuing education seminars, workshops and conventions to keep informed ofcurrent trends and developments in the hospital pharmacy field.

  • ManagesEmployee Dispensing Benefit.

  • Performsother related functions as required/directed.


  • Bachelorof Science degree in pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited collegeof pharmacy and Iowa License.

  • Threeto five years of staff experience in the hospital pharmacy field preferred.

  • Knowledgeof hospital pharmacy computer systems preferred.

  • Abilityto communicate well with Nursing and Medical Staff of the hospital.
