Henry County Health Center Lab Assistant in Mount Pleasant, Iowa

Responsible for the collection and processing of laboratory specimens, ordering laboratory tests, sorting and distributing laboratory reports, answering phones, specimen labeling, transporting samples between collection sites and the laboratory, plating microbiology specimens, performing waived tests, preparing and staining slides for analysis, performing phlebotomy, record testing information, cleaning and restocking the lab facility, keeping inventory and ordering lab supplies, load and operate laboratory testing equipment for waived testing only, clean and maintain medical laboratory and medical laboratory equipment, must demonstrate absolute accuracy in patient identification. Requires the ability to professionally portray the Laboratory’s image by demonstrating pleasant and courteous mannerisms at all times.

  • Greets Public

  • Register patients for services.

  • Verify all components for clean admission (insurance, signatures, phone number, address etc.).

  • Processes pre-registration documents.

  • Reconciles and adjusts daily census.

  • Arranges for proper bed assignment according to patient type and diagnosis and secures transportation services for the patient.

Communicates errors and problems to appropriate associate for correction.

  • Demonstrates thorough working knowledge of laboratory operations.

  • Outstanding phlebotomy skills.

  • Capability of realizing when to ask for technical assistance.

  • Ability to use several computer programs for ordering and processing specimen samples. Requirement: High

  • Combines ethical judgment with technical skills within policy and legal guidelines of the HCHC.



  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

  • A valid driver’s license to provide phlebotomy coverage to area care facilities.


  • Minimum of two semesters in allied health field with a clinical experience requirement.

  • Phlebotomy certificate

  • Working knowledge of Word and Excel Software

  • Computer classes / experience

  • Medical terminology

  • Clinical experience in a hospital setting


  • None.


  • Competent to maintain operates laboratory equipment. No special equipment required.
