Performance Excellence Specialists provide leadership in the development and implementation of performance management strategies related to care of the patient across the continuum, clinical indicators, outcome measures, process improvement methodologies and services that ensure clinical quality. Has accountability for the functions of Performance, Safety, and Process Improvement. Supports clinical, inter-professional and service units/departments/clinics, including the medical staff in identified projects and improvement efforts, in order to enhance overall organizational outcomes and service initiatives. Assists in the development of reports to promote data driven decision-making throughout the hospital and clinics. Utilizes performance improvement methodology and data analysis to assist and guide organization-wide performance improvement efforts. Attends medical staff and unit/department/clinic meetings as needed presenting performance improvement processes and/or data/analysis. Assists with education of physicians and hospital/clinic staff members as it relates to quality and improving performance. May be involved in abstraction of patients’ medical records for data required by the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) and Health Insurance Plans, to assure acquisition of scheduled payment increases or additional reimbursements, necessary for the continued operations of the hospital. May be involved in accurately abstracting data from patients’ medical records related to multiple indicators as required by The Joint Commission (TJC), Trinity Health, MercyOne and other national health care databases. Participates in hospital and clinic committees to present process improvement, data/analysis, and utilizes performance improvement methodology to facilitate corrective action planning to improve patient care and outcome.


  1. Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Bachelor's degree in related field required.

  2. If RN and not bachelor's prepared, BSN must be completed within 3 years of hire/transfer date.

  3. Current RN license to practice nursing in Iowa.

  4. Three to five years’ clinical experience.

  5. Previous employment as a quality/performance excellence specialist preferred.

  6. Previous experience abstracting medical records as assigned preferred.

  7. Previous hospital or clinic performance improvement experience preferred.

  8. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, and shared leadership environment.

  9. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission and vision, goals, and values of MercyOne and Trinity Health.
