Title: Clinic Medical Assistant - Y1842 Department/Subsidiary: Mercy Clinics Effective Date: – October 2018 JOB SUMMARY: Provides support in the medical field by performing various medical and clerical activities to assure quality care and a more efficient work place. ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY A. Reports to: Clinic Manager/Office Coordinator or Nurse Supervisor / Functions under Provider’s license. B. Supervises: None C Key Working Relationships: Providers, Clinic Manager, Office Coordinator, Clinic Staff, Vendors, Mercy Clinic Administration, and other Departments/Representatives within Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa. D. Primary Customer Groups: Patients and families served within Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa E. Age/Population of Patients Served: Neonatal Adolescent Geriatric Pediatric Adult X All Ages ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS A. Escorts patient to exam room. Obtains and documents data to include but not limited to chief complaint, allergies, vital signs, pain level, medication history, and fall risk. Obtains and reviews basic health history information. Anticipates and prepares exam room with equipment and supplies required for the visit. Assists with exams/procedures as requested. B. Utilizes written Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa policies/procedures and universal precautions when performing lab/diagnostic tests or procedures. Reports and documents all critical lab/diagnostic test values to provider. Performs, maintains and documents quality controls as applicable/requested, i.e., logs, proficiency tests, maintenance records, etc. C. Assists in scheduling patients for office appointments, lab/diagnostic tests/referrals. Reviews written test preparation handout with patient and documents in medical record. Refers patient to provider/registered nurse if patient education is required. D. Completes charge ticket/submits charges in electronic health record to include and obtain the diagnosis from the provider, identifying and initialing all billable supplies and services. Obtains ABN per e-LMRP as necessary. E. Utilizes proper procedure for administering medications with emphasis on patient safety. Documents administration of medications. F. Maintains competency in administering medications via the following routes: IM, SQ, ID, oral, inhalation, ocular, optic, topical, sublingual, and nasal. G. Documents notification/follow-up of phone messages under direct supervision of a provider. H. Maintains a positive working relationship with co-workers, medical staff, and personnel of other departments, and assists customers. I. Assists in cost containment by maintaining an adequate quantity of supplies in workstations, exam procedure rooms (lab and x-ray also if applicable). J. Supports Process Excellence concepts and participates in continuous process improvements, ensuring quality patient care and improve customer satisfaction. K. Assists in providing basic education information to patients and documents in medical record. L. Performs actions and duties of the clinic scribe to enter information into the electronic health record at the direction of a provider, working as an integral member of the care team. M. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations. N. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs. O. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Guiding Behaviors. P. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment. Q. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or regional director. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS A. Participates in the training, orientation, and education of new employees. B. Serves as a resource person for patients and other clinic staff. C. Functions as a team member by providing back up when needed. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS A. Education [formal]: 1. Graduate of an approved school for medical assistant required. 2. Credentialed as a medical assistant is required. (CMA, RMA, NCMA) B. Experience: 1. A minimum of six months work experience in a health care facility performing duties relating to patient care is preferred. 2. Additional experience involving computer knowledge. C. Special Skills and Competencies: 1. Communication skills with the ability to maintain and display professionalism with customers and coworkers. 2. Organizational skills with attention to detail. 3. Typing speed of 35 words per minute (verified by testing) preferred X Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status. X Completes Mandatory Reporting: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse requirement within 6 months of hire and renews this requirement every 3 years. Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

Patient Care Assistant

Hourly Pay Range: $13.36 - $18.71

JOB SUMMARY

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) will provide assistance with clerical and clinical activities inherent to physicians or advance care practitioners (ACP) practicing in the clinic setting. This assistance will be under the direct oversight of the physician or ACP. The physician or ACP will review and approve actions to taken at key junctures during patient care. The intention is to minimize the physician/ACP's clerical functions while maximizing his/her clinical role, thus improving patient flow and satisfaction, under the physician or ACP's direct oversight.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Successful completion of a formal Nurse Aid or Emergency Medical Technician course/training verified through transcript or original program certificate of completion OR

Graduate of a Medical Assistant program OR

Currently enrolled in an A.D.N., B.S.N., program with successful completion of first semester of A.D.N. program,

OR first year completion of nursing courses in BSN OR

Graduate of an A.D.N., Diploma, BSN or LPN program.

Experience:

A minimum of six months work experience in a health care facility performing duties relating to patient care is preferred.

Additional experience involving computer knowledge

Clinic Registered Nurse (RN)

Clinic Registered Nurse Hourly Pay Range: $18.36 - $26.66

JOB SUMMARY

This position accepts the responsibility and accountability for the delivery of patient care with the multidisciplinary team while using the nursing process and maintaining professional nursing standards.

The Clinic Registered Nurse is responsible for managing nursing care essential to the assessment, promotion, maintenance, and restoration of patient's health and wellness within their scope of practice. The Clinic Registered Nurse will direct and support nursing/clinical personnel providing patient care within the facility as assigned by the Clinic Manager. This includes the evaluation, revision, and implementation of clinical policies and procedures related to the delivery of safe and efficient quality nursing care, maintenance of clinical staff personnel and education records, in-services and performs Clinical Staff functions.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma and graduate of a school of nursing is required
  • A current Iowa License as a Registered Nurse is required

*Experience: *

  • Six months of experience in an ambulatory setting preferred
  • Supervisory experience in an ambulatory care setting is preferred

Special Skills and Competencies:

  • Knowledge of management and nursing organizational theory to direct the operation of clinical staff
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of employee development to train, delegate, and mentor staff
  • Knowledge of medical safety practices and standard requirements to evaluate existing standards and implement new procedures that are age specific
