The incumbent serves as a Histocompatability Technologist/Specialist in the Iowa Regional Histocompatabitity and Immunogenetics Laboratory at the Iowa City VA Hospital located in Iowa City, Iowa. The Technologist functions as a member of the transplant team, providing high complexity histocompatibility testing for evaluation of patients pre/post-transplantation in support of solid organ and blood and marrow transplant programs. The position requires specialized knowledge in histocompatibility and analytical instrument systems, skills in adapting and executing high complexity laboratory testing, ability to exercise independent judgment and responsibility under pressure, and excellent communication skills.
Incumbent adapts and performs a variety of hands-on high complexity histocompatibility and immunology clinical laboratory tests involving compulsive attention to detail and precision. Testing requires adhering to established policy, quality control procedures, and organizational standards as well as exercising independent judgement of sample selection, sample quality, instrument setup, and testing results. Incumbent incorporates historical results, histocompatibility knowledge, and molecular databases in test analysis, interpretation and reporting. Testing requires theoretical and operational knowledge of flow cytometry, Luminex, sequencing and other complex analytical systems. Clinical test results are used directly to inform patient care decisions, to select appropriate donor:recipient pairs, and to determine distribution of organs.
Performs other duties as assigned, which may include: Safety Officer, Record Liaison, Continuing Education Coordinator, ADPC, alternate ADPAC, purchasing and reconciliation, contracting.
Work Schedule: 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. Some flexibility of tour. Participation in on-call coverage of evenings, nights, weekends & holidays required. Education Requirement: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position, these fields may include but are not limited to transplantation, biomedical science, or clinical laboratory function. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (http://www.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html) at the time the degree was obtained. Current certification as CHT or Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) by ABHI or a Medical Technologist (MT) by ASCP or AAB preferred.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note:Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: * Specialized Experience:You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience may include but are not limited to:high complexity hands-on research or clinical laboratory testing related to histocompatibility, transplantation, blood banking, immunology, or genetics. * OR, * Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this position you must have a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position, these fields may include but are not limited to transplantation, biomedical science, or clinical laboratory function. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (http://www.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html) at the time the degree was obtained. OR, * Combination:Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of one year of graduate education may be combined with experience. To compute the percentage, divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the semester hours of graduate education beyond one year by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements:The work requires considerable standing, or sitting at laboratory bench and extensive utilization of computer assisted data analysis programs. Work areas may be confining. Working hours may be non-standard with weekend and holiday on call work/standby, and lengthy days 8-16 additional hours on a given day.
