Surgery Support Technician

FTE: .90 (Full-time, 36 hours per week)

Shift: 6:30am-3:00pm

  • Assists with room turnover as directed by registered nurse.

  • In addition, may perform routine and/or special cleaning needs of areas as assigned by the registered nurse.

  • Maintains and restocks supplies.

  • Changes Nitrogen tanks as needed.

  • Maintains and restocks cleaning supplies via Environmental Services.

  • Transports specimens to Lab and Radiology.

  • Retrieves blood and/or blood products from Lab.

  • Verifies identification of patient prior to transport utilizing patient chart, patient armband and patient verbalization.

  • Transports patients safely as assigned by the registered nurse.

  • Assists with the care for surgical patients from infant through geriatric as assigned by the registered nurse.

  • Functions in day-to-day and emergency situations in accordance with AORN ( standards and as assigned by the registered nurse.

  • Communicates with other members of the healthcare team in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.

  • Participates in unit operations demonstrating professional behaviors to include supporting goals of nursing unit and maintaining awareness of resource utilization.

  • Participates in non-direct patient care activities including educational activities, performance improvement activities, and other related activities.

  • Completes environmental tasks as assigned: Completes environmental cleaning of the unit prior to the start of day’s schedule.

  • Completes terminal cleaning at the end of the surgical day.

  • Completes and documents accordingly all cleaning listed on the Surgical Service Operating Room Monthly Cleaning Logs by dating and initialing when assignment is completed.

  • Cleans and returns all Surgical Service equipment to proper storage location in the Surgical Service Dept.

  • Cleans all patient stretchers/Zoom Carts/wheelchairs in accordance with hospital policy.

  • Performs clerical duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrates telephone courtesy.

  • Maintains storage of supplies and assists in accounting for chargeable items.

  • Labels identification cards for Opthalmology patients under the direction of the registered nurse prior to the surgical procedure.

  • Demonstrates positive customer relation skills.

  • Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) preferred

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to exercise good judgment, maintain interpersonal relationships and adapt to change.

  • Ability to organize work.

  • Must demonstrate knowledge and skills required for specialized area of assignment.

  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to all age surgical patients.

  • Must develop working knowledge of surgical equipment.

  • Accountable for work done in assigned job.

  • Work as a team.

  • Be available to nursing staff in assigned areas.

Certification/Course:

  • Basic Life Support, refer to Job Description Addendum.
