CNA (Patient Care Technician) - Endoscopy

FTE: .90 (Full-time, 36 hours per week)

Shift: Monday - Friday 7am - 3pm; with rotating call shifts

  • Assists with care for infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients as assigned by the registered nurse.

  • Assists the registered nurse by obtaining temperature, respiration, height and weight.

  • Assists patients as need indicates.

  • Acknowledges and meets patients' needs regarding movement and elimination.

  • Assists patients with activities in a safe manner as directed by the nurse.

  • Functions in day-to-day and emergency situations in accordance with nursing standards and as assigned by the nurse.

  • Provides “on-call” coverage for Endoscopy unit.

  • Completes cleaning of endoscopes using automatic washing machine per manufacturer recommendations and unit guidelines.

  • Assists the physician and staff with procedural tasks within job description.

  • Performs patient transport in a safe manner.

  • Communicates with other members of the health care team in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.

  • Demonstrates positive, professional communication with open dialogue among members of the healthcare team.

  • Consistently displays an open, creative attitude toward continual learning.

  • Demonstrates respect of patients’ confidentiality in all communication.

  • Participates in unit operations demonstrating professional behaviors to include supporting goals of nursing unit and maintaining awareness of resource utilization.

  • Participates in non-direct patient care activities including educational activities, performance improvement activities, and other related activities.

  • Completes environmental tasks as assigned.

  • Completes daily cleaning of the unit.

  • Checks daily refills as needed on all dispensers.

  • Completes cleaning listed on unit's routine cleaning list.

  • Cleans and returns equipment to proper storage place.

  • Performs clerical duties as assigned.

  • Labels chart pages with patient identification.

  • Assembles chart pages in approved sequence and chart order identified.

  • Maintains orderly storage of supplies and assists in accounting for chargeable items.

  • Demonstrates competence in performing assigned tasks for the comfort and safety of patients.

  • Demonstrates positive customer relation skills.

  • Adheres to all hospital and department policies and procedures and dress code.

  • Demonstrates competent use of computer programs as appropriate.

  • Preparing and positioning patients for procedures,

  • Assists physician with instrumentation during procedures including the collection of specimens, cultures, and biopsies.

  • Develops knowledge of the Endoscopy patient population and of nursing routines, and assists as needed with basic patient-care tasks under direct supervision of an RN, and assists in emergency procedures in an inpatient setting and on call as required.

  • They will instruct the driver on the process and take the patient to the admit room so they can dress for the procedure.

  • The endo tech, under the direct supervision of the RN, will assist with patient discharge. They will assist patients in getting dressed, and help them out to their vehicle as necessary


  • Completes cleaning of endoscopes using automatic washing machine per manufacturer recommendations and unit guidelines.

  • Adheres to the competencies and guidelines for high level disinfectant and gas sterilization.

  • Consistently and comprehensively practices universal precautions in order to prevent the transmission of infection to self or others.

  • Is knowledgeable of and consistently and comprehensively practices the appropriate handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals to ensure hospital compliance with OSHA standards and to ensure the prevention of contamination or injury to self or others.

  • Is responsible for the appropriate care and handling of endoscopes and all auxiliary equipment, including proper inspecting, cleaning, disinfecting, processing, assembling, and storing of the above as defined by unit based standards. Recognizes the difference between sterile versus disinfected versus clean equipment and supplies. Is knowledgeable regarding the circumstances in which each of the above categories is applicable and strictly and consistently adheres to all applications in order to prevent patient contamination and/or infection.

  • Is responsible for providing high level disinfection or sterilization of equipment used in procedures using endoscopes to include duodenoscopes and bronchoscopy scopes


  • Seventy-five (75) Nursing Assistant Course


  • Certified Nursing Assistant certificate required. LPN, EMT, Surgical Tech would be considered.


  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and strong communication skills.

  • Previous patient care experience preferred, prior endoscopy or Surgery scrub tech knowledge preferred


  • Ability to exercise good judgment, maintain effective interpersonal relationships, effective verbal and written communication skills and adapt to change.

  • Ability to organize work.

  • Must demonstrate knowledge and skills required for specialized area of assignment.

  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care appropriate to adult and geriatric patients.


  • Basic Life Support completion required. Refer to Job Description Addendum.

  • Endoscopy Associate and Advanced Associate Technician certification from SGNA will be required after hire.
