GENERAL SUMMARY :
Provides screening and assessment of individuals with mental health issues to determine appropriate care or referral, including admission to the hospital, in collaboration with the medical staff. Responsible for collecting and maintaining accurate information required for the registration and billing process for psychiatric/substance abuse patients. Also responsible for the coordination of documenting preauthorization and verification. The intake coordinator responsibilities also include implementing a standardized process to address the needs of uninsured/under-insured patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Performs registration functions. Registration function includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Selecting the correct Corporate Patient Index (CPI) number.
Precert requirements for all types of registrations; i.e., inpatients, ED, and outpatients.
Knowledge of Coordination of Benefits.
Knowledge of liability information.
Knowledge of all types of registrations; i.e., ED, inpatients, and outpatients.
Knowledge in areas of third party payors, insurance, and regulatory requirements.
Assesses patient’s levels of risk and mental status and identifies optimal resources and level of care to meet their mental health needs.
Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team, including psychiatry to assess and plan care to meet their current needs.
Maintains a high degree of accuracy in collecting patient demographics and insurance information from various sources; i.e., patient, patient family, physician, physician clinic and hospital personnel.
Works collaboratively with case managers and Patient Accounts in verification and authorization and payment.
Provides information and referrals to those in the community on resources to meet mental health and substance abuse
Maintain knowledge of confidentiality laws and third party liability laws
Stays updated on contract payors – additions and deletions
Demonstrates ability to verify all insurances through appropriate resources (i.e., telephone access, audio, Blue Cross, FSS).
Assists in interviewing uninsured/under-insured patients for qualification criteria leading to State and government funding possibilities.
Is knowledgeable of all Managed Care and marketing discounts.
Is knowledgeable of alternate-financing programs.
Is able to access, edit and/or enter information on the billing system.
Communicates with customers, their guarantors, employers, insurance agents, attorneys, insurance representatives and government officials.
Works independently and makes appropriate decisions within hospital and department guidelines with managerial assistance as needed.
Act as liaison between Mercy Behavioral Health, Patient Accounts and Admitting.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS :
Serves as resource for mental health/substance abuse clients with questions.
Operates miscellaneous office equipment.
Must possess strong organizational skills, with ability to prioritize work on an ongoing basis.
Ability to project a calm, caring, and professional image during stressful situations.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :
Possession of a current or compact state license as a Registered Nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa (BSN preferred) or Masters degree in social work or related field
A minimum of one-year experience/familiarity with patient/billing softwares and/or computer programs, required.
Experience in psychiatric/substance abuse specific admitting/insurance/billing preferred.
Understanding of medical terminology preferred.
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
