Summary This position is located in the Domiciliary residential rehabilitation facility within the VA Central Iowa Health Care System, in Des Moines, Iowa. This position provides extended care to Veterans with complex alcohol and drug disorders, mental health issues and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The Domiciliary also treats Veterans with psychosocial issues including homelessness and unemployment. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Some of the duties and responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to): Develops and maintains a therapeutic, professional, helping relationship with residents admitted to the Domiciliary; Provides orientation to new residents by explaining policies/procedures, treatment expectations, and goals; Interviews each resident to assess skills, needs, associated activities of daily living, leisure and work interests, personal hygiene, interpersonal communication, etc.; Provides individual counseling as needed, applying experience and knowledge of problems; Provides care based on recovery-focused, patient-centered care principles; Provides crisis intervention in situations of a medical, psychiatric and/or behavioral nature; Obtains UAs and breathalyzers per unit policy; Initiates basic cardiac life support utilizing basic CPR training, Personal Protective Equipment and the Automatic Electronic Defibrillator; Completes reports of special incidents using electronic reporting package or completes VA reporting forms; Monitors compliance with treatment plan requirements as well as Dom regulations; Conducts Veteran room searches for health, welfare, safety and security purposes; Performs regular administrative functions, e.g. processes residents for admit clearance, completes entries in Cardex and shift report, completes progress notes, etc.; Performs all other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Available tours include Monday-Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm; 3:30 pm - Midnight; Midnight - 8:00 am Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Financial Disclosure Report: Not Required Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. In order to qualify for this position, you must possess at least ONE of the following minimum qualifications: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service. Specialized experience is that which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specific qualifying specialized experience for this position (which should be documented on your resume) is: experience that involved the observation of and assistance in the application of techniques relating to behavior, capacities, traits, interests, and activities of either humans or, under laboratory conditions, animals. Experience may have been gained in connection with a program of research or direct services in psychology that gave a practical understanding of some of the principles, methods, and techniques of psychology needed to assist professional psychologists. OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successfully completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study (or at least 24 semester hours) in any combination of courses in psychology, statistics, or other directly related subjects. NOTE TO APPLICANTS: This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. OR COMBINATION: Possess equivalent combinations of experience and education as previously described to fully meet the requirements of this position. For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Additional Information Physical Requirements: Work is carried out mostly in an office. However, the employee regularly conducts inspections and supervises building cleanup, etc. Overall duties require occasional lifting, carrying 50+lbs, sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling/pushing, simple grasping, and reading above shoulder. conditions may also include heat, cold, excess humidity, work with chemicals, dust, noise, driving a vehicle, fire manipulation, etc. Flexibility, tact, initiative and critical thinking are needed to perform duties with residents with a wide range of diagnostic categories. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
