UnityPoint Health Neonatal Nurse Practitioner - Inpatient at Blank Children's Hospital - Des Moines in Des Moines, Iowa
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner delivers specialty care with a high degree of expertise in perinatal and neonatal health by formulating a plan based on assessment, examination, and selected diagnostic procedures within her/his scope of practice. The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner also provides leadership for the health care team by collaborating with physician, nursing, care manager and multi-disciplinary team members to ensure high quality, comprehensive health care is delivered.
Utilize a holistic approach considering physical, psycho/social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate for neonates and their families in the NICU, maternity center, and within the region to meet the needs of the patients
Establish a database of information on the neonate/family by:
obtaining a health and developmental history
conducting a complete physical assessment using appropriate tools
ordering appropriate screening and/or routine diagnostic tests
conducting a gestational age assessment of the infant using appropriate techniques
Assess status of the neonate by:
discriminating between normal and abnormal physical findings
recognizing deviations from normal growth and development
providing interventions and evaluating the infant’s response
Manage neonate/family care by:
providing for resuscitation, stabilization, and treatment
assisting other members of the health team with management of neonate/families referred for problems; including NICU residents, NNP students and nursing staff
participating in health care plans involving the neonate, family, and other resource personnel
providing care based on evidence based practice, unit based protocols and AAP standards
Competent to perform procedures in neonatal population: including PICC placement, UAC/UVC placement, intubation, arterial puncture, thoracentesis, and lumbar puncture
Coordinate care when indicated with community resources and agencies including lab, radiology, private health care providers, social workers and public health.
Assist in BCH and unit specific duties i.e. leadership responsibilities and/or teaching as a resource person for other staff and personnel with which neonate/families have contact
As a team, provide 24 hour coverage for the NICU and MWH Maternity Center as needed
Maintain current knowledge of emergency medical procedures and responds appropriately
Graduate of an accredited Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program
Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing. Certification as an NNP
Current license as RN and as an ARNP in the State of Iowa
Neonatal Resuscitation Program trained
Iowa Controlled Substance license
Current DEA registration
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Able to effectively deal with diverse neonate/family populations and community partners
Able to read, write and speak fluent English
