Summary

The incumbent serves as a Lead Medical Support Assistant trainer and auditor of lower graded Medical Support Assistants (MSA) in all inpatient areas throughout the facility. He/she reports to the Chief Nurse of Extended Care & Rehabilitation Service Line and provides training and competency assessments for inpatient MSA's performing patient movements as well as administrative support within the Community Living Center (CLC.).

Responsibilities

The core function of the Lead MSA trainer/auditor is to assist in training all new and incumbent MSA's on a standardized and comprehensive training program to ensure accuracy of patient movement processes, records management and scanning, patient court committals and assisting department work flow. He/she demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of workflow operations of the inpatient areas and demonstrates a high-level of proficiency in computer programs/software. He/she will become highly-proficient in data collection in a variety of databases and required software including VSE, VSSC, ICB, CPRS, and VISTA. Common duties of the position include, but are not limited to: Provide training to incoming MSAs in collaboration with Learning Services and Support Services. Complete Just-In-Time training with MSA's as needed. Complete audits of patient movement actions, scanning and records managements practices to ensure accuracy and timeliness. Monitors performance measures related to MSA workload and leads staff in performance improvement efforts. Works closely with respective Nurse Managers to monitor performance. Directs MSA coverage and provides coverage where needed. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM- 4:00 PM. Occasional evenings to meet off tour training needs, hours negotiable.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/27/2020. BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

(a) Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) (b) Education and/or Experience Combination: Experience. Six months of experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR Education. One year above high school; OR Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Lead Medical Support Assistant, GS-6 Grade Requirements:

(a) Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. Examples of specialized experience includes advising clinical staff on current administrative processes; answering phones, greeting patients, relaying messages to appropriate staff inside or outside of the unit; scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient appointments and/or consults; interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with scheduling guidelines; monitoring appointment requests from multiple electronic sources; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information when patients check-in for appointments; coordinating administrative functions relating to emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; and determining appointment type based on the patient's eligibility status. (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate all of the KSAs below: Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines. Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect, ensuring compliance with established policies and regulations. Ability to provide staff development and training. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage priorities, and coordinate with staff in the unit in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely manner. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work. Ability to review and monitor data to ensure all reports are complete and accurate. Preferred Experience: One year experience as an inpatient MSA at the appropriate grade level. Excellent verbal and written communication skill, ability to work in a team and lead teams, be self-directed, possess critical thinking skills and be customer service oriented. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point. Experience with VISTA, VSSC Reports and Pyramid Cubes as well as other databases.
