Job Description

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Public Health. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is recruiting to fill the position of Deputy State Medical Director.

This individual will:

  • Assist with the direction of state-wide disease surveillance, investigation, and follow-up.

  • Assess trends of diseases, risk factors for health of events, effectiveness of prevention and control efforts, and implement appropriate modifications to improve the health of Iowans.

  • Consult with the public, local public health officials, and medical professionals on medical and epidemiological issues.

  • Assist with the coordination of state health programs, and coordinate public health efforts across state lines and with federal agencies.

  • React to health events to assure appropriate public health response, and coordinate with other state agencies during emergencies to assist in public health preparedness and response.

  • Assist with the direction and participation in educational efforts concerning health risks, acute diseases and disease prevention.

  • Assist in policy development, including analyzing and advising the Public Health State Medical Director and Epidemiologist on implications of policy decisions, primarily at the state level, but also at the national level as appropriate/directed by the State Medical Director and Epidemiologist.

Applicant must pass a background check prior to employment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of medicine, completion of an internship program and licensure as a physician by the State of Iowa.
