GENERAL SUMMARY :

This job is responsible for providing cares to patients, families and staff within assigned settings, in conjunction with pastoral care volunteers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Deliversspiritual care and assessment appropriate to critically ill or dying patient’sspirituality, culture, religious preference and health status; providesspiritual support to grieving families; attends to spiritual and emotionalneeds of specific patient and family populations such as pre-surgery, trauma,hospice and maternity.

  • Works closely andeffectively with care managers, interdisciplinary care teams, social workers,nursing and medical staff.

  • Collaborates with volunteers and local clergy to provide extensivespiritual care services including providing support group facilitation, healingservices, and community education.

  • Utilizes spiritual care guidelines where developed for family and staffeducation; documents and maintains records of spiritual care; responds toreferrals regarding specialized needs of patients, families, and staff.

  • Provides direct spiritual consultation for staff; provides educationaland ethical consultation for patients, families, staff and volunteers;contributes to ethical consultation and family conferences appropriately andwhen needed.

  • Investigates, identifies and implements strategies to more effectivelyuse available resources to meet client needs.

  • Facilitates prayer and healing rites as appropriate to area of service.

  • Participates in crisis intervention on codes, deaths, and debriefing asnecessary.

  • Documents and maintains records of pastoral activity.

  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Demonstrates exceptional customer service and interacts effectively withphysicians, patients, residents, visitors, staff and the broader health carecommunity.

Scheduled Hours per 2 week Pay Period: 64

Primary Location: IA > DES MOINES > MERCY MEDICAL CENTER

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Divinity, Pastoral Ministry or Spirituality or the equivalent from an accredited college, university, or recognized deaconate formation program, required.Masters preferred.

  • At least one (1) unit Clinical Pastoral Education

  • Ecclesiastical endorsement from Bishop of the diocese or religious superiors

  • Meets the education requirements of the National Accreditation of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), or National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) certification preferred; eligibility for, or in active process of, certification considered

  • One (1) year experience in hospital ministry or other experience in a clinical setting that would demonstrate the ability to perform the work of the position.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter Abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
