technical support in the delivery of pharmaceutical care to clients of Mercy

Medical Center. Technical support includes the preparation and delivery of

medications and sterile products, review of charts for specific

information/audits, stocking and ordering of drugs and other products.

Technical work is performed under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.


  • Prepares patient drug orders.

  • Delivers medications and IV admixturesto patient rooms, critical care areas, and other ancillary areas.

  • Reviews patient MAR and care plansto determine need to return medication to the pharmacy for credit.

  • Picks up medication orders fromnursing areas and distributes for processing.

  • Credits to the patient and restocksusable medications/IVs returned to the pharmacy.

  • Files medication orders.

  • Fills unit-dose exchange envelopes.

  • Processes medication drawers andorders files for admissions, discharges, and transfers.

  • Assists the pharmacists withaudits.

  • Completes assigned unit inspections.

  • Restocks automated medicationdispensing machines (AcuDose or Pyxis).

  • Enters fill stock requisitions forother departments.

  • Restocks tackle boxes and cartinserts (crash carts, airway carts, latex carts), and completes check in/outprocess.

  • Communicates stock utilization andordering needs.

  • Checks medication expiration datesand alerts pharmacist when needed.

  • Compounds and labels extemporaneousliquid and solid products for patients according to procedure.

  • Answers telephone and processesrequests according to procedures.

  • Prepares IV admixtures includingTPNs, chemotherapy IVs, IV piggybacks, and syringes. In doing so, always followsstrictly described, specific policies and procedures. This includes those intended to comply withUSP 797 and hazardous drug regulatory requirements. In addition, inventory andorders selected supplies; prepares and appropriately labels stock sterileproducts; coordinates the supply of investigational products.

  • Charges and credits individualpatient accounts from pharmacy file lists.

  • Provides training and mentoring tonew employees and assists in directing workflow as needed.



  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Registered or eligible to register as pharmacy technician with the State Board of Pharmacy Examiners within 30 days of hire date.

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification required.
