  • Purpose of Job

  • Performs routine and delegated duties according to departmental policies.

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D) required

  • Completion of Nurse Assistant training preferred.

  • * Experience*

  • Basic patient care, infection control and hygiene.

  • Related hospital training preferred.

  • Medication dosages, previous experience with anesthesia department, medication accountability, cleanliness and knowledge of aseptic techniques.

  • Responsible for ordering supplies.

  • * License/Certifications*

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred.

  • State of Iowa registration as Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPT) required within one (1) year of employment.

  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing, adapt to changes,l earn new techniques and work directly with physicians.

Promotes positive relations when interacting with patients, visitors, families, physicians, customers and co-workers. - Greet, smiles and makes eye contact.

  • Responds quickly to patients and/or other peoples' needs.

  • Knows and demonstrates 6 step customer complaint management process.


Makes available to the Anesthesia Department medications, IV's, and maintains accountability. - All medications and IV supplies are to be ordered daily and made available to the Anesthesia Dept.


Sets up anesthesia equipment for all operating rooms scheduled for use. - All operating rooms will be readied for each patient with anesthesia hoses connected, vaporizers filled, IV's in place, monitors available as well as other necessary equipment.


Cleans anesthesia supplies and equipment in all operating rooms as soon after use as possible. - Maintain cleanliness of equipment and supplies.


Follows hospital policy and procedures for selected contaminated surgical cases. - Shared responsibility in upholding infection control policy of the department.


Maintains a daily check on function of equipment. - All Equipment available should be in proper working order, i.e., batteries, light bulbs, hoses, tourniquets, etc.


Cleans anesthesia work room, all anesthesia machines and work carts. - Uses appropriate solution and follows department's policies and procedures for cleaning.


Changes all sharps containers weekly and/or as needed. - All sharps will be disposed of according to hospital policies.


Checks and defrosts refrigerator as needed. - Refrigerator should be cleaned and defrosted once per month.


Orders anesthesia supplies and equipment. - Maintain replenished supplies at all times.


Daily orders fluids and medication for next day's use from Pharmacy. - Maintain replenished supplies at all times.


Arranges for appropriate service representative for needed repairs and service. - All equipment must be maintained in proper working order and preventative maintenance recorded.

  • Keeps Director of Surgical Services and Clinical Coordinator informed of service needs and/or repair needs.

Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by management. -
