GENERAL SUMMARY :

Performs and interprets

laboratory test in the areas of hematology, chemistry and urinalysis in an

outpatient clinic setting for a variety of patients of diverse ages.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Performs the following technical lab services vital for the diagnosisand treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age to include neonatal,infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric adult:

  • obtains/or receives laboratory specimens

  • performs, interprets clinical laboratory testing

  • follows safe work practices

  • understands the principles of and competently performs preventativemaintenance, quality control and quality assurance

  • performs basic trouble shooting of instrumentation and procedures

  • performs phlebotomy

  • Analyzes and reports 5-part manual differentials

  • Performs corrective measures for hemoglobin in Protimes/PTT

  • Performs corrective measures for hemoglobin > 20.0 grams onhematology instrument andNRBC’s

  • Maintains records oftests performed and results received.

  • Maintains patientconfidentiality at all times.

  • Participates in staffdevelopment, new employee training or orientation as requested.

  • Works independently,organizing work to meet established deadlines; records and reports data obtained accurately to patient andhealth care team members.

  • Demonstrates ability torecognize and assess emergency needs of patients and initiate appropriateemergency procedures as needed.

  • Performs laboratory testing (including phlebotomy and a variety ofroutine and/or automated tests), and maintains records of tests performed andresults received.

  • Reports results and pertinent information to patient and health careteam members.

  • Documents lab results in patient record accurately.

  • Recognizes critical lab values and reports to physicians in a timelymanner following established protocol.

  • Maintains inventory of lab supplies.

  • Complies with regulatory agencies (i.e. CLIA, COLA, OSHA) in opera­tionof lab.

  • Demonstrates functional knowledge of third party payors.

  • Responsible for quality control and proficiency testing appropriate forthe testing performed ensuring that levels are maintained throughout the entiretesting procedure from the initial quality control, throughout testing, andreporting of test results.

  • Responsible forreporting technical problems and ensure that remedial actions are takenwhenever tests deviate from established performance specifications.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLSAND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or in chemistry,biology or related field with one-year clinical internship in a NationalAccrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accreditedClinical Laboratory Science program or approved alternate careerpath as designated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of1988 (CLIA) or possess credentials from a foreign country attestingto clinical laboratory training and experience consistent with or superiorto the above requirements..

  • Registration by the American Society of ClinicalPathologists (ASCP) as a medical technologist or by the AmericanMedical Technologists (AMT) as a medical technologist orcategorical registration by either NCA or ASCP in one of the laboratorysciences or grandfathered by the U.S. Military is required

  • Knowledge of: Medicallaboratory techniques, prin­ciples, and instruments.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) monthsof hire.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abusetraining specific to population serve within three (3) months of hire.
