Medical Lab Technician - Mercy West Clinic - PT.6 (Varied)
GENERAL SUMMARY :
Performs and interprets
laboratory test in the areas of hematology, chemistry and urinalysis in an
outpatient clinic setting for a variety of patients of diverse ages.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Performs the followingtechnical lab services vital for the diagnosis and treatment of disease asappropriate for patient age to include neonatal, infant, child, adolescent,adult, and geriatric adult:
obtains/or receiveslaboratory specimens
performs, interpretsclinical laboratory testing
follows safe work practices
understands the principlesof and competently performs preventative maintenance, quality control andquality assurance
performs basic troubleshooting of instrumentation and procedures
Analyzes and reports 5-partmanual differentials
Performs corrective measuresfor hemoglobin in Protimes/PTT
Performs corrective measuresfor hemoglobin > 20.0 grams on hematology instrument
Maintains records of testsperformed and results received.
Maintains patientconfidentiality at all times.
Participates in staffdevelopment, new employee training or orientation as requested.
Works independently,organizing work to meet established deadlines; records and reports
data obtained accurately to patient and
health care team members.
Demonstrates ability torecognize and assess emergency needs of patients and initiate appropriateemergency procedures as needed.
Performs laboratory testing(including phlebotomy and a variety of routine and/or automated tests), andmaintains records of tests performed and results received.
Reports results andpertinent information to patient and health care team members.
Documents lab results inpatient record accurately.
Recognizes critical labvalues and reports to physicians in a timely manner following establishedprotocol.
Maintains inventory of labsupplies.
Complies with regulatoryagencies (i.e. CLIA, COLA, OSHA) in operation of lab.
Demonstrates functionalknowledge of third party payors.
Responsible for qualitycontrol and proficiency testing appropriate for the testing performed ensuringthat levels are maintained throughout the entire testing procedure from theinitial quality control, throughout testing, and reporting of test results.
Responsible forreporting technical problems and ensure that remedial actions are takenwhenever tests deviate from established performance specifications.
Work includes crosscoverage in other clinic areas as team needs.
Maintains supplyinventory and stocks supplies in various work areas.
Assists with nursing chartaudits.
Misc. office duties(i.e. copying, filing, retrieval of films/medical records)
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLSAND ABILITIES REQUIRED :
Associate degree in a science-related field withcompletion of a six-month clinical internship from a National AccreditingAgency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Clinical LaboratoryScience program or approved alternate career path as designated in the ClinicalLaboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) or possess credentialsfrom a foreign country attesting to clinical laboratory training and experienceconsistent with or superior to the above requirements.
Registrationby the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a MedicalLaboratory Technicianor by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) as a medicallaboratory technician or N.C.A. as a Clinical LaboratoryTechnician, or grand fathered by the U.S. Military is required.
Knowledge of: Medicallaboratory techniques, principles, and instruments.
Basic Life Support (BLS)for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) monthsof hire.
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abusetraining specific to population serve within three (3) months of hire.
