Job Summary / Purpose

Assumes responsibility and accountability for the direct and indirect care of the surgical patient during the pre-operative (Pre-op) and post-operative (PACU I) phase. Provides professional nursing care to patients, incorporating the nursing process, the environment of care and the technical equipment in conjunction with health care team members.


Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Administers nursing care to patient: includes nursing assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating the patient’s care plan under the guidance of physician orders, unit protocols/policies and nursing judgment.

  2. Maintains patient confidentiality and delivers care in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity and rights.

  3. Always considers factors relating to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning/delivering patient care.

  4. Skilled in starting IV for surgery/procedure

  5. Utilizes electronic health record to process orders and retrieve patient information/test results.

  6. Maintains knowledge about documentation requirements and continued update of information needed for accurate documentation using the EHR.

  7. Accesses policies, professional publications and electronic resources to provide patient/family or caregiver education, counseling in recognition and solutions of physical, emotional, and environmental health problems in the scope of nursing practice.

  8. Provides leadership and direction in the supervision of others in carrying out the nursing process.

  9. Communicates effectively and appropriately with patients, families, physicians, staff and other health care team members. Demonstrating maturity and accountability for job performance.

  10. Participates in ongoing educational activities related to clinical knowledge, professional development of peers and colleagues. Including community organizations.

  11. Takes assigned call as scheduled with the expected response time of 45 minutes of less.

  12. Assists with clerical duties (i.e. scheduling, answering phone, using office equipment, and prepares patient charts).

  13. Maintains and manages surgical supplies, equipment and environment.

Other duties as assigned by management.

Current license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of Iowa
