POSITION SUMMARY

A Security Officer is responsible for providing services that seek to create a safe and secure environment for the hospital community. The Security Officer undertakes activities designed to identify, deter, abate, or correct situations; both routine and emergent that are within the scope of responsibility for the department, as they occur on hospital owned or controlled property.

The Security Officer reports, when on duty, to the Security Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The associate is aware of hospital and department compliance for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.

  • Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.

  • Successfully completes hospital-wide orientation, annual hospital competencies and department/unit specific competencies.

  • For the safety of our patients and co-workers, St. Luke’s Hospital requires seasonal and job related vaccinations. This is reviewed regularly during periodic health assessments.

PROVIDES SERVICES IN A MANNER THAT ENHANCES THE HOSPITAL'S ENVIRONMENT AND IMAGE.

  • Facilitates cooperative formal and informal working relationships with other departments and medical staff.

  • Facilitates resolutions of intra, interdepartmental and medical staff conflicts.

  • Ensures patient, family, and visitor satisfaction with services provided.

  • Ensures physician satisfaction with services provided.

  • Ensures written/verbal representation of programs and services are consistent with desired hospital standards.

  • Participates in quality assurance activities ensuring any necessary corrective action in areas assigned.

    AIDS IN THE SUCCESSFUL ATTAINMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT'S GOALS AND FULFILLMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT'S FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES.

  • Cooperates with program concepts, changes, etc., to achieve goal success.

  • Undertakes to provide all services in the manner and function required to achieve fulfillment of the associated responsibility.

  • Provides suggestions for the improvement of existing services, initiation of new services, goal achievement, etc., for the betterment of the department.

  • Identifies to the Manager any trends, problems, concerns, etc., discovered in the performance of duty that would aid in fulfilling the departments functional responsibilities, the growth and development of the department or that are hindering the successful operation of the department.

  • Assists in the development, knowledge and training of new officers in the department.

    MAINTAINS A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL WITHIN THE SAFETY AND SECURITY FIELD NECESSARY TO PERFORM DUTIES IN A RESPONSIBLE, EFFECTIVE AND PROFESSIONAL MANNER.

  • Participates in department meetings, inservice training sessions, shift report meetings, educational offerings, etc., as required.

  • Attends such other training programs offered by the hospital or outside sources as assigned by the department Manager.

  • Cooperates with department supervisory personnel in sessions designed to enhance the officer’s individual performance, skill, knowledge, etc.

  • Completes the necessary requirements of such other individual study or maintains certification in various skill areas necessary to fulfill the expectations of the position responsibilities, as may be assigned.

  • Maintains knowledge of current developments affecting the hospital, department and/or officer by reviewing logs, operational manuals, standing orders, SOP's, etc., on a regular basis.

    PROVIDES SERVICES OR ENGAGES IN ROUTINES DESIGNED TO ASSIST IN ASSURING THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THE HOSPITAL COMMUNITY AND INSTITUTIONAL ASSETS ON ALL HOSPITAL OWNED OR CONTROLLED PROPERTY.

  • Promptly responds to directions of Manager/Lead Officers and/or assignments from the communications center or requests from the public (associates and non-associates) that are within the scope of department responsibilities using the department operational protocols required.

  • Initiates independent action as necessary/expected to accomplish department objectives when confronted with a situation/incident occurring within the department’s jurisdiction and scope of responsibility.

  • Actively and aggressively undertakes patrol routines or post duties on a continuous basis when not on a specific assignment.

  • Takes corrective action to abate criminal activity or deviant behavior occurring within the institution's boundaries by confronting suspicious individuals, investigating questionable activity, or by other investigative/enforcement techniques and activities.

  • Identifies reports and when necessary, takes corrective action to abate safety hazards, security concerns or situation/circumstances that could place the hospital or its population at risk.

  • In a fair and impartial manner, enforces hospital rules and regulations that relate to the scope of responsibility for the department.

  • Disseminates information and provides service as requested or assigned for the hospital staff and general public within the expectations of the department's responsibility.

  • Performs specific duties related to a particular shift, assignment or patrol area or as assigned by department Manager/Leads.

    RESPONDS AND REACTS TO EMERGENCY SITUATIONS AS DIRECTED BY THE SECURITY SUPERVISORS OR INDEPENDENTLY AS EXPECTED BY DEPARTMENT POLICIES/PROCEDURES TO ASSURE THAT THE PROPER RESOLUTION OF THE SITUATION IS ACHIEVED.

  • Responds or reacts promptly to emergency situations to intervene and resolve or assist and support other hospital staff in resolution activities.

  • Follows the directions of Leads, hospital administrative personnel or others empowered to direct emergency response activities to assure achievement of a proper, coordinated response and a successful resolution.

  • When required to act independently, interpret hospital and department policies and procedures, apply them to the specific occurrence, formulate and initiate a plan of action to resolve the situation.

  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of department emergency procedures, plans and expectations; and of any related hospital emergency protocols so as to capably and successfully supply information, perform actions, or provide assistance as the situation requires.

    PERFORMS DUTIES IN THE DEPARTMENT'S EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS CENTER TO COORDINATE AND MONITOR THE ACTIVITIES OF SECURITY STAFF AND PROVIDE SERVICES OR OTHER FUNCTIONS THAT ARE OPERATIONAL ROUTINES OF THE COMMUNICATIONS CENTER.

  • Receives calls and requests for security assistance or services and under the guidance of the Manager, assigns officers to perform the required function.

  • Monitors various alarms, devices, and systems and initiates proper response procedures following established department protocols.

  • Coordinates, under the direction of the Manager, field activities of on-duty security officers to systematize the provision of services.

  • Performs specified tasks delegated to the Emergency Communications Center for other hospital departments, affiliated agencies and enterprises to assist in their operational functions and delivery of service.

  • Monitors transceiver devices of outside agencies to advise and, when necessary, coordinates activities with affected hospital departments.

  • Maintains records, logs, and other clerical systems necessary for the orderly and methodical operation of the Emergency Communications Center and department.

  • Performs clerical duties under the direction of the department secretary for the Security department necessary for departmental operation.

    PREPARES DOCUMENTATION AS REQUIRED TO ASSURE THE PRESERVATION OF INFORMATION AS NECESSARY FOR CONTINUITY OF DEPARTMENT OPERATIONS.

  • Completes all required documentation (ie., reports, logs, records, etc) in an accurate, precise and professional style and submits them in a timely manner as prescribed by department policy.

  • Prepares reports on all incidents, occurrences, variances, etc., in which a permanent record of the facts is necessary to document the position/action of the hospital, department or officer.

  • Composes reports in a manner that results in a comprehensive and thorough narrative, detailing the circumstances of the event that provides a clear, concise and accurate understanding of the situation.

  • Produces reports or other required documentation in a manner and style that conforms to established format expectations as prescribed by department policy.

  • Assures, to the best of his/her ability, that all documentation is accurate and unbiased; and that there is as complete and comprehensive documentation as necessary to preserve the facts, information, data, etc.

  • Records all pertinent activities while on duty through the Emergency Communications Center in accordance with established procedures in order to maintain a comprehensive and continuous record of all department activities.

    MAINTAINS, AT ALL TIMES, A PROFESSIONAL IMAGE IN APPEARANCE AND DECORUM AND PERFORMS ALL DUTIES IN A SAFE MANNER.

  • Complies with the designated uniform dress code and Personal Appearance Policy as prescribed by department regulations.

  • Conforms to expectations as established by the infection control program and universal precaution guidelines.

  • Performs all duties in a safe manner abiding by any safety regulations or using any prescribed safety equipment.

  • Whenever on duty or in uniform, conducts all activities and action in manner and form that reflects a professional, positive attitude in a polite and courteous demeanor.

    PERFORMS RELATED DUTIES AS ASSIGNED TO FACILITATE HOSPITAL OR DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY; ABIDE BY HOSPITAL AND DEPARTMENT RULES AND REGULATIONS TO ASSURE SUCCESSFUL COMPLIANCE WITH POSITION EXPECTATIONS.

  • Complies with all points of the departmental and hospital manuals, rules, SOP's governing the officer.

  • Fulfills other duties related to the safety and security of the institution as may be assigned.

  • Undertakes various assignments related to the overall organizational and administrative functioning of the department that may be assigned.

Education

  • Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

  • High School Diploma.

  • Criminal Justice and/or Law Enforcement Degree preferred

Qualifications/Experience

  • Healthcare Security experience preferred.

  • Law Enforcement background preferred.

  • Must read, write, and speak fluent English.

  • Valid Iowa Driver’s License
