POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Lead Rehabilitation Office Nurse the associate completes assigned duties as an office nurse, serves as a vital communication link between the physician(s) and the patients, families, referral sources, physicians’ offices and others. The associate assist the rehabilitation physicians(s) as needed in the outpatient rehabilitation office. Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing patient care within an outpatient office setting. The patients to be served include adolescent, adult, and geriatric population with occasional infant or pediatric patient populations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Is aware of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.

  • Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.

  • Performs patient care functions as required.

  • Implements measures to promote a safe environment for the patient/family.

  • Works cooperatively with all professional groups to accomplish rehabilitation patient team goal

  • Assists in outpatient rehabilitation examinations and treatments/procedures by physicians including EMG, spasticity management, initial and recheck evaluations. Also assist the spine clinic physician with patient.

  • Anticipates physician’s need for supplies and instruments prior to and during the course of the examinations

  • Facilitates post acute referrals to the appropriate post acute intake nurse.

  • Communicates effectively with discharge planners, insurance carriers, physicians, patient, family members and other related parties.

  • Successfully completes the orientation and annual hospital and unit specific competencies.

  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills with other health care team members.

  • Verbal communication is clear and precise.

  • Written communication is legible, if handwritten, and done in a timely manner.

  • Computer documentation is done in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrates flexibility and self direction in meeting patient and office needs by responding as a team player.

  • Provides educational opportunities to patients, families and other health care associates based on adult teaching-learning concepts.

  • Integrates patient/family teaching throughout the course of care including the overview of the plan of care, diagnostic procedures, and discharge teaching. A focus on health and preventative health maintenance should be incorporated into the teaching plan.

  • Assists in the orientation of new associates by acting as a resource to learner, collaborating with unit supervisor/lead/preceptor and/or acting as a preceptor.

  • Participates in the education experiences of students.

  • Provides professional nursing leadership through compliance with established office routines, policies and procedures.

  • Assists in creating a positive work environment that promotes productivity.

  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development.

  • Continually maintains and strives to enhance personal technical and clinical competence in all job related duties.

  • Specialty certifications encouraged.

  • Participates in appropriate professional organizations.

  • Participates in mandatory education and office staff meetings, per established guidelines.

  • Participates on unit and hospital-wide committees and performance improvement activities.

  • Complies with established infection control and risk management policies and procedures.

  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary to meet the hospital’s mission and vision.

Education

  • Completion of accredited nursing program.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Possess a current Iowa RN or LPN license.

  • Previous rehabilitation nursing experience preferred

    Special Skills/Knowledge

  • Maintain current BCLS certification.

  • Must be able to successfully complete basic computer course through in-hospital training.

  • Must successfully complete in-hospital orientation and competencies.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required to perform basic/advanced nursing procedures in the administration of medication therapy and the operation of complicated specialized equipment.

  • Demonstrates skill, organization, and efficiency in performing required patient care activities.
