UnityPoint Health Nuclear Medicine Technologist-Radiology (Part Time) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for working within the established guidelines of the Imaging Services as assigned. The Technologist is expected to understand and support the Mission and Vision of St. Luke's Hospital. As a professional the Technologist is responsible for carrying out the philosophy and objectives established by the hospital Board of Directors and the Management Team. Foremost among these responsibilities are strictly adhering to detail in the technical performance of radiology procedures, solving practical and analytical problems, resolving conflict, and implementing constructive change.

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for providing timely and effective services to the customers of the assigned departments, assuring that the professional and technical process is carried out. Customers include all age groups of patients, from neonates to geriatrics.

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist:

  • Performs careful and accurate work in any technical area as assigned.

  • Performs procedural exams within specified turnaround time for assigned area.

  • Assures procedural exam guidelines are strictly adhered to, complies with exam procedure technical factors and protocols in consultation with the radiologist.

  • Assures compliance with published rules and regulations relating to Nuclear Medicine activities (receiving, processing, distributing and storing radioactive materials).

  • Consistently and accurately performs quality control procedures on all survey monitoring instruments and gamma cameras.

  • Administers radioisotopes according to approved exam indication criteria and in consultation with approved materials licensed physician.

  • Documents all necessary information in the performance of technical procedures, including adequate history and quality control.

  • Performs patient procedural education.

  • Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following protocol for patient history, exam, film identification and labeling.

  • Maintains compliance and is responsible for executing and monitoring technical practices in order to meet necessary standards, recommendations and requirements of voluntary and government agencies (i.e., IDPH, ACR, TJC).

  • Understands and adheres to all safety practices (ALARA) while performing duties to minimize any risk of injury and/or exposure to unnecessary ionizing radiation.

  • Documents pregnancy appropriately for females of child bearing age.

  • Possesses ability and makes good independent decisions based upon a knowledge of the overall departmental functions, policies and procedures.

  • Promotes the development, preparation, implementation and attainment of departmental goals, policies and projects.

  • Maintains an adequate level of productivity.

  • Accurately observes ATMS regulations.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer programs as assigned by department.

  • Communicates with the department supervisors as necessary when problems or unusual circumstances arise and documents as necessary.

  • Greets all customers, including patients, coworkers, physicians and other hospital personnel, with a pleasant and professional manner and appearance.

  • Follows departmental dress code and wears proper identification at all times.

  • Is able to prioritize work appropriately and assists others as time and workload allows.

  • Communicates effectively inter- and intra-departmentally with other healthcare professionals and customers to provide accurate, timely information and to reduce problems and minimize exceptions.

  • Attends inservices, CPR, on the job training, and continuing education programs to meet developmental needs and keep abreast of new technologies. Documents at least 24 hours every two years with 1 hour in radiation safety.

  • Uses AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) with every patient interaction to create patient and family experiences consistent with the mission of St. Luke’s Hospital.

  • Perform patient transfers with approved transfer mobility equipment when appropriate.

  • Assists in maintaining a high quality and well-organized radiologic science program by assisting with student clinical and/or didactic instruction as necessary.

  • Is aware of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (eg. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.

  • Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital's commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: NMTCB certified or ARRT (N). Must be graduate of an accredited program in Nuclear Medicine Technology. Must have current permit issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English. Experience in computer systems is desirable. Must possess excellent communication skills.
