UnityPoint Health Endoscopy Technician in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Responsible for the technical aspects of patient care under the direct supervision of the registered nurse (RN). Patients to include infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. The purpose of the Endoscopy Technician is to assist with the preparation, cleaning and maintenance of endoscopy equipment. The Endoscopy Technician will maintain general stocking of the endoscopy department. The Endoscopy Technician will assist and transport patients to and from the endoscopy department. Under the direct supervision of the RN, the Endoscopy Technician may assist with basic patient cares. The Endoscopy Technician will work with the physician and Registered Nurse as a member of the direct care team during the endoscopy procedure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Skill in procedure set up inclusive of major equipment and accessory equipment.
Skill in equipment storage and maintenance inclusive of history management.
Skill in equipment assembly and accessory equipment function.
Skill in troubleshooting GI equipment.
Skill in reprocessing of endoscopes and all equipment and all equipment by mandated standards of processing.
Knowledge and understanding of reprocessing standards of endoscope and accessory equipment.
Is aware of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.
Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
Performs assigned patient care duties as needed and/or delegated to, which may include:
- Partners with the RN and other patient care team members to achieve patient’s progress towards outcomes identified in plan of care.
Obtains and records and/or successfully enters the following data into the computer: vital signs, specimens, and other appropriate patient observations as assigned.
Performs specific tasks as directed by RN and other patient care team members, after training and validation:
specimen collection and labels appropriately
set up simple oxygen therapy (nasal cannula)
Provides patient interactive skill with age specific needs and considerations.
Responds to patient call lights promptly
Provides assistance to other team members as required.
Assists patients as needed with activities of daily living.
- Provide patient care under the direction and delegation of the registered nurse.
Provide basic patient care meeting the pre-,intra-and post-procedure needs in a safe environment
Assist with patient mobilization (i.e., bed to chair, bed to bedside commode, bed to bathroom, bed to stretcher, etc.)
Assist with ambulation with or without assistive devices.
Medications – May assist in transporting medications that are not controlled substances.
Demonstrates an awareness of patient and personal safety.
- Implements measures to promote a safe environment for the patient/family.
Observes and promptly reports any unusual occurrences.
Practices correct body mechanics n performing patient care activities.
Consistently assures patient safety in the use of side rails, equipment, nurse call lights, etc.
Provide safe patient positioning, transferring and transportation.
Practices standard precautions for infection control in performing job duties.
Ensures safe environment by keeping patient care areas free of clutter and spills.
Assures that all necessary equipment and supplies are available.
Observes restraint protocol, falls precautions as appropriate.
Records daily refrigerator temperatures on log as appropriate.
Organizes, cleans, and maintains unit work areas, supplies, and equipment.
- Assist in maintaining nourishment stock and unit supplies.
Rotates/removes out-dated stock/supplies.
Assists in maintenance and stocking of unit supply carts, medication cart and patient room equipment ,linens and stock as deemed appropriate per unit.
Cleans unit equipment.
Obtains and/or returns equipment to Materials.
Empties patient and/or unit trash receptacles as needed.
Keeps patient/procedural /scope processing room organized and free of clutter.
Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills with other health care team members.
- Verbal communication is clear and precise.
Written communication is legible, if handwritten, and done in a timely manner.
Computer documentation is done in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Provide documentation of the procedure equipment and specimens as required.
Demonstrates flexibility and self direction in meeting patient and unit needs by responding as a team player.
- Provide effective organization of time according to patient flow and unit needs.
Assumes responsibility for personal growth and development.
Continually maintains and strives to enhance personal technical and clinical competence in all job related duties.
Participates in mandatory education and unit staff meetings, per established guidelines.
Complies with established infection control and risk management policies and procedures.
Performs other duties as deemed necessary to meet the hospital’s mission and vision.
The Endoscopy Technician is a graduate from an accredited high school or equivalence program.
Qualifications that will be considered for the position include: college course work, preferably in the health care field; satisfactory completion of an approved nursing assistant course; previous work or military experience in health care. Previous hospital experience is helpful and preferred for this position.
