SUMMARY Coordinates total nursing care for the surgical patient and the patient receiving outpatient therapy. Works in cooperation with ancillary health care departments in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice and in providing quality care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties as assigned.
Provides patient education, including pre and post-op teaching, self care needs, medication teaching, pain management, etc.
Checks charts for appropriate lab work and values, ensures that pre-op work is done as ordered
Excels in effective time management.
Coordinates, communicates, and exchanges information with Admissions, Surgery, Same Day Surgery, Anesthesia, and other inter-related departments within SARH.
Carries out assignments with minimum supervision and guidance
Communicates effectively with physicians and CRNAs.
Carries out and notes physician and CRNA orders.
Utilizes professional judgment and nursing skills, including critical thinking skills.
Performs physical and psychological assessments.
Obtains vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
Administers medications as needed.
Maintains accurate and timely charting and documentation.
Answers phones promptly and communicates respectfully.
Starts and discontinues IVs.
Prepares surgical charts for the next day.
Makes post-op call backs.
Completes all other duties as assigned.
Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.
Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.
Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Policies on the Intranet.
Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.
Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing.
At least one-year experience in a related nursing field.
Additional knowledge, abilities, and skills required by this position
-Possess positive communication skills
-Able to carry out assignments with minimum supervision and guidance.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before customers, patients, families and employees of the organization.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS/CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Graduate of an accredited school for nursing
Licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Iowa.
Current BCLS certification required before starting employment
ACLS certification within six months of employment.
PALS certification within 1 year of employment for all full-time and part time staff, PALS not required for relief RNs.
Minimum of two years Med/Surg experience preferred.
