SUMMARY To ensure the highest standards of patient service and financial excellence by providing assistance, education and support to oncology patients throughout the continuum of care, meeting a diverse set of patient and financial needs.
To assist with the coordination of services and medical management activities, including information gathering, insurance verification, pre-authorization and regular correspondence with patients, payers and clinicians in order to facilitate quality and timely services to our patients.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Acts as primary point of contact for cancer patients for navigating through the financial aspects of payment for care. Identifies and develops opportunities to better provide information to potential patients and referral sources.
Establishes a positive, supportive relationship with newly diagnosed cancer patients, using effective customer service/interpersonal skills at all times and rendering financial counseling to address sensitive financial issues.
Completes an assessment of referred cancer patients, focusing on their financial needs and identifying all possible public and private funding sources.
Ensures accurate and up to date insurance verification
Completes pre-authorization for medications and treatments/procedures as ordered. Collaborates with clinical team on assuring insurance payers have the clinical documentation needed to process pre-authorizations in a timely manner.
Collaborates with physicians, clinicians and other health professionals to assess financial barriers to care including patient health literacy, insurance issues and financial barriers to care, including facilitation and completion of pharmaceutical assistance and financial assistance applications.
Investigates and secures alternative payment sources when insurance is not available or patient is underinsured.
Establishes and maintains positive, supportive relationships with physicians and hospital staff, educating them about the financial navigator services and encouraging early referral of newly-diagnosed, uninsured or under-insured cancer patients.
Actively monitors and gains understanding of new public and private cancer resource programs that could assist cancer patients and their families with their financial needs.
Maintains standards of professional practice, strict confidentiality, advocacy and ethics.
Works closely with Patient Finance and the Oncology Nurse Navigator to support the oncology patients along the financial journey and help prevent financial toxicity.
Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct
Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations
Attends all mandatory meetings and programs
Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St Anthony’s Safety Manual
Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information
Completes all other duties as assigned
Minimum of 2 years experience in an acute care setting working with financial needs of patients, preferable with an understanding of cancer patients. Previous experience with insurance verifications and pre-authorizations. Understanding of medical terminology is required.
