The position is accountable for building a brand new team of bacterial scientists based in Ames, Iowa. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and managing the Bacterial Disease Research Strategic Plan in collaboration with all other Innovation Division (ID) functions (BIAH, BI Human Pharma and external collaborators) aligned with ID governance processes, and the long term Animal Health business strategy. This strategy will have lasting impact on the overall portfolio value. The bacterial disease research team led by the incumbent will identify and develop ways for the control of bacterial diseases, in veterinary species. The incumbent is accountable for the discovery and development of novel entities, as well as the initiation and support of opportunities for life cycle management, prevention and control of bacterial diseases. As part of the AH Research Leadership Team, the incumbent is expected to contribute to the strategic direction and leadership of AH Research activities. The incumbent will also lead and manage the appropriate life cycle management activities collaborating with global strategic marketing.

Duties &Responsibilities:

  • Participate as anactive member of the AH Research Leadership Team and Innovation Committee. Workclosely with other Research leaders to support early research, ongoing projectsand initiatives. Provide strategic inputs to the Head of Research related toinnovative life cycle management, prevention and control of bacterial diseases.

  • Accountable forproactively developing, refining, implementing and executing the BacterialDisease strategy for BIAH, as well as provide regular updates to ID leadership.Ensure technical approaches are implemented that lead to a high scientificquality, robust and innovative pipeline. Ensure the pipeline progresses withinagreed upon timeline, budgets, and according to BI standards.

  • Develop and maintainstrong relationships with key experts, both internally (AH and HP) andexternally. Act as thought leader/expert within and across AH and HPfunctions. Build a global network ofKOLs, experts and collaborators to ensure access to leading expertise and newopportunities in bacterial disease research. Utilizing these relationships,facilitate a collaborative environment for identification, evaluation andprogression of strategic opportunities. Will support all BIAH R&Dfunctions, Business Development, and Global Strategic Marketing as needed to ensurethe success of the BIAH business franchises moving forward.

  • Responsible forensuring bacterial diseases research builds and maintains on institutionalknowledge of competitive research developments and IP. Provide expertise toevaluation of new and emerging concepts of bacterial diseases that may beapplied to treat or control bacterial diseases of animals in the future. Ensuresteam collaborates with other Innovation Division functions to enable smoothtransitions through the research and development process.

  • Maintain relevantcontemporary scientific awareness of advances in science and customer's needs,as well as competitor R&D activities. Support IP development and long termvalue of BI assets. Publish and present research results in alignment with theobjectives of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health's publication policy.

  • Build a center ofexcellence for bacterial disease research that designs and executes novelbacterial disease prevention and control strategies during the discovery andclinical proof-of-concept (POC) stages and ensures transition to development.

  • Provide leadership,strategic direction, development opportunities, and mentorship for directreports globally. Communicate the big picture of the main task frequently andprovide role clarity to the entire team. Promote, inspire, and support a culture of scientific inquiry and discovery,building a learning culture that delivers scientific excellence.

  • Ensure that allactivities remain compliant with all appropriate internal BI standards forsafety, scientific standards, animal welfare standards as well as beingcompliant with all appropriate local, country and regulatory agency laws andrequirements.

  • Ensure laboratoryfacility and equipments are well maintained, adequately budgeted and secure.


  • PhD (or equivalent)from an accredited institution in the Life Sciences or Bacteriology and with atleast ten (10) years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical and or vaccinediscovery and development.

  • Ten to twenty (10-20)years of experience in bacteriology research activities and or the discoveryand development of vaccines and new chemical entities to prevent and controlbacterial diseases.

  • At least five (5)years of previous experience with leadership and management of direct reportsand technical teams globally.

  • Extensive scientificknowledge of infectious diseases and their prevention and control throughinnovative products.

  • Extensive knowledgeof bacterial disease research and development processes as well as a strongunderstanding of the veterinary relevant veterinary species and theirmanagement.

  • Excellent workingknowledge of vaccine and pharmaceutical discovery and research, includingvaccine development, NCE screening, models, and processes

  • Possess a deepunderstanding of both basic science, project leadership and the performance andneeds of bacterial control products on the Animal Health market.

  • Incumbent will havea thorough understanding of the pharmaceutical and vaccine discovery processincluding development and application of relevant targets and screens to helpestablish structure activity relationships.

  • Appropriateknowledge of vaccine development and an excellent understanding of relevantbiological principles.

  • Ability toestablish, manage and lead internal and external teams of qualifiedprofessionals.

  • Ability tounderstand, influence and motivate personnel in a matrix organization and beable to work efficiently under pressure.

  • Excellentcommunication and interpersonal skills.

  • Fluency in Englishis mandatory.

DesiredExperience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability tocommunicate in another language such as French or German is beneficial.


  • Must be legallyauthorized to work in the United States without restriction.

  • Must be willing totake a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).

  • Must be 18 years ofage or older.
