Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, clinical-track faculty position to support the clinical educational development of professional students in veterinary medicine. The qualifications, documented experience, and interests of the selected candidate will determine appointment rank.

The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to teach VM1-VM4 students the art of general small animal practice through participation in both the educational (Surgery, Anesthesia, Community Outreach) and clinical (Primary Care) teams. These teams work collaboratively to provide high quality educational experiences for professional students to enhance their clinical competency in general small animal practice. Primary efforts will focus on didactic and laboratory teaching, course administration, and assessment (75%). Clinical service responsibilities on the Primary Care service in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) will encompass 10-15% of duties. Educational and clinical duties will include shared weekend and after-hours obligations. The remainder of effort will be collaborative clinical and educational research efforts and institutional service. The percentage effort associated with these combined activities will be determined by mutual agreement between the candidate and the Department Chair of VCS.

The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking an individual with a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in all levels of student, technician, and house officer education. The candidate will be highly self-motivated, innovative, and will possess excellent communication skills and experience working with a diverse population. Furthermore, the candidate will demonstrate professional maturity with a leadership style that contributes to a positive culture, and have a compassionate and empathetic nature towards colleagues, students, clients, and patients of the LVMC. All employees are expected to exhibit and convey good citizenship within the programs, department, college, and university as well as maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

-DVM or equivalent degree.

-A minimum of 5 years clinical small animal practice experience in a private or academic setting

  • State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before the first day of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Advanced certifications within Veterinary Medicine (example: IVAPM, Fear Free, CVPP etc.)

-Documented experience in teaching

-Additional years of clinical experience

-Documented experience in dentistry, surgery, anesthesia/pain management

-Documented commitment to continuing education

-Board certification or eligible (ABVP or other)

-Practice management experience

  • An advanced degree (MS, PhD, or equivalent degree)
